EMSELLA Q&A

What is EMSELLA?

EMSELLA is a noninvasive treatment that uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM®) energy to stimulate and strengthen the muscles on your pelvic floor. The treatment induces similar muscle contractions to the contractions caused by kegel exercises. In fact, just one treatment is equal to 11,000 kegel flexes. However, you don’t need to consciously move your muscles during the treatment.

EMSELLA treatments are comfortable, easy, and nonsurgical. You’ll sit fully clothed in a chair for 30 minutes as the device does all the work. You can read, listen to music, or close your eyes. Once your session is complete, you can go straight home or back to work without downtime.

What does EMSELLA treat?

EMSELLA is a treatment for urinary incontinence. Urinary incontinence happens when your pelvic floor muscles weaken, often because of:

  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Certain infections
  • Diuretic foods, drinks, or medications
  • Menopause
  • General aging

If you have urinary incontinence, you might struggle to make it to the bathroom once you feel the urge to urinate. You might also let out a bit of urine each time you cough, sneeze, or laugh. These problems can be embarrassing and anxiety-inducing, regardless of your age.

What do EMSELLA treatments feel like?

Most people agree that EMSELLA treatments are comfortable and very easy to tolerate. You might feel vibrating and tingling as your pelvic muscles begin to contract. The contractions feel no different than a pelvic floor workout with intentional muscle movements.

How many EMSELLA treatments do I need?

The professionals at Revive Health Clinic sit down with you for a consultation and ask about the severity of your urinary incontinence. In most cases, it takes a series of six EMSELLA sessions to treat moderate incontinence. If this is your treatment protocol, you’ll undergo two sessions per week for three weeks. Each session takes less than 30 minutes, and you’ll notice the full effect two to three months after your final session.

How long do EMSELLA results last?

You might notice your urinary incontinence symptoms return between six and 12 months after your initial series of treatments. Your provider at Revive Health Clinic can help you book maintenance treatments as needed. Single sessions work for maintenance treatments, so you don’t need to book a series of treatments with only days between them after your initial series. Your provider can also give you tips for home care that will help your results last.
